Press Releases
June 20th, 2008 - With the rising temperatures and humidity, Cincinnati women now have one less thing to sweat: their hair The Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment featured on NBC’s The Today Show has arrived in Cincinnati just in time for summer
CINCINNATI (June 20, 2008) – For Carol MacConnell, an artist from Hyde Park, styling her hair every morning has been a struggle with some rather unsatisfactory results. “I only used a flat iron if I was going out in the evening. Most of the time, my hair didn’t look very good, even with a great cut. I just didn’t like the texture of my hair,” explains MacConnell. The culprit behind the endless string of bad hair days is one many Cincinnati-area women know all too well: humidity.
This is when her stylist, Sarah Caudill of Michael and Company Salon in Anderson Township of Cincinnati, offered a bit of salvation: the Brazilian Keratin hair treatment and Michael and Company is the only salon in the area to offer it. It’s a relatively new service making headlines all over the country including NBC’s The Today Show. Michael and Company Salon, an Aveda concept salon, began offering Brazilian Keratin treatments after a client with extremely coarse and curly hair requested the service. She became enamored with the treatment while in Miami.
Michael and Company Salon has now performed over 25 treatments on their clients, some of whom travel over two hours for the process. “Our clients love it,” Caudill says about the treatment. “We had a client who was skeptical at first, questioning if it would last. A week after receiving the treatment, she came into the salon screaming and yelling about how great her hair felt. She made us all feel how smooth it was.”
The treatment originated in Brazil and arrived on American shores only two years ago, beginning in California and Florida and has since moved as far north as Canada. It is called escova progressiva in Portuguese, meaning ‘progressive blow-dry.’ Michael and Company Salon straightening specialists use a 450-degree flat iron to seal keratin, the treatment’s active ingredient, into the hair strands. This process seals in moisture, keeping the hair shiny and glossy.
Unlike many relaxers and straighteners, this method does not damage the hair because it only adds ingredients that hair naturally possesses. “Keratin is found naturally in the hair and the more keratin the hair has, the straighter it is,” Caudill says. Although many brands that offer Brazilian Keratin treatments contain formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, Michael and Company Salon uses only products that are 100% formaldehyde-free.
This treatment is for anyone with curly hair to those who would like to eliminate frizz and flat ironing from their daily routine. MacConnell had color-treated hair covering gray coarse hair. She claims the treatment has completely transformed the texture of her hair, allowing for a simple “blow-dry and go” morning routine. “I haven’t used a flat iron since and every day my hair looks great,” gushes MacConnell. “I don’t know if I look younger, but I feel younger.”
The process takes anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours and costs between $150 and $300, depending on the length and texture of the hair. The treatment lasts for three to four months. Consumers are able to resume all other hair treatments, including coloring and highlighting, two weeks after the treatment is applied.
“For many women, this is more than just a new hairstyle; it’s a life-altering treatment,” explains Michael Abernathy, owner of Michael and Company Salon. He continues, “It’s a process that changes the feel and look of the hair to make living in Cincinnati a little more bearable.” As for MacConnell, she finally has the hair she’s always dreamt of and wants everyone to know about it. “When I see women on the street with my kind of hair, I want to run up and tell them that there’s hope!”
